Wollongong Business Valuation Services, Organised by the Decision You Face

The reason you need a figure settles most of the rest: the standard of value, the depth of the report and who will scrutinise it. So the eleven services here are grouped by the decision each one supports, from a sale in the Wollongong CBD to a family handover in Kiama, and not by valuation method.

Indicative valuations from A$799. Certified Summary and Detailed reports from seven business days.

Wollongong Business Valuations offers eleven services in three groups: sale, deals and planning; tax and compliance; and disputes and litigation. Each page explains what prompts the valuation, which approach usually leads, where valuations commonly go wrong and which report fits. Indicative valuations are for internal decision-making only, while Summary and Detailed reports are certified.

One analysis, three depths of report

Every report rests on the same analysis: accounts normalised, the relevant approaches applied and the results reconciled to a conclusion. How much of that work appears on the page is set by the report type, and the reader decides which report type is needed. A family business in Shellharbour planning a handover, or a North Wollongong practice weighing an offer, usually wants a range it can act on. A bank, the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Revenue NSW, the ATO or an opposing party needs a certified opinion whose reasoning can be traced and tested.

How an engagement runs

The same six steps apply to every service, whether the client is a Port Kembla freight business or a family-run accommodation provider in Kiama. Only the information requested and the amount of analysis written into the report change from one engagement to the next.

1. Scoping call

A free conversation to identify the purpose, the interest being valued, who will read the report and what information exists. That conversation settles the standard of value and the report depth before any fee is agreed.

2. Information request

A written list of what we need: financial statements and tax returns, management accounts, the constitution or shareholders agreement, leases, key contracts and anything specific to the purpose. Delivery is measured from the day the last item arrives.

3. Analysis

Normalisation of the accounts, selection and application of the approaches, derivation of rates and multiples from named sources, discounts where the interest requires them, and reconciliation to a range.

4. Draft and review

A second certified valuer reviews the workfile and the draft before anything leaves the office. Every judgement has a written reason attached to it.

5. Closing conversation

The valuer walks you through the result and answers questions. Your accountant or lawyer is welcome to join; many clients say it is the most useful hour of the engagement.

6. Final report

Signed and delivered digitally, from seven business days after we receive the information. The valuer remains available to explain or defend the opinion afterwards.

At every stage you will know who has the file, where it is up to and what happens next.

What these services do not cover

Two other documents are frequently confused with ours. The first is the expert's report that the Corporations Act requires in takeovers, schemes of arrangement and some member approvals, governed by ASIC Regulatory Guides 111 and 112. That report is a licensed financial service and we do not write it. We can provide valuation work that a licensed expert relies on, and we give private company boards opinions on transactions that need no statutory report.

The second is the quick estimate from a website or a business broker. Our business valuation calculator is free and designed to teach, and it says so. A broker's figure is pitched to win the listing. Neither will be accepted as evidence by a bank, a court or the other side; when the number has to hold, a certified valuer signs it and stands behind it.

Further reading on this site

Each service page points to our Wollongong industry pages, which apply the approaches to medical and dental practices, professional firms, hospitality venues, manufacturing and fabrication, trades and construction, technology businesses and freight operators, and to the three valuation approach pages that set out the methods in full.

Choosing a valuation service: common questions

Start with what is happening rather than the method. A sale, a purchase, a handover to family, a restructure or an equity issue sits under sale, deals and planning. A CGT concession claim, an SMSF audit, an estate or a set of financial statements sits under tax and compliance. A shareholder falling-out, a separation or a lost profits claim sits under disputes and litigation. Where one event touches two groups, such as a sale that relies on the small business CGT concessions, we settle at the scoping call on the single report that covers both.
Sometimes, and it is better to ask before the report is written than afterwards. A sale valuation will often serve a bank lending as at the same date. An employee share scheme needs two figures, one for tax and one for the accounts, and a family law valuation is prepared on a basis no lender would adopt. Each report states its purpose and who may rely on it, so a purpose added later may need a supplementary letter or a fresh report.
Yes. We are based at 1 Burelli Street in the CBD and act for businesses across Wollongong and the wider Illawarra: North Wollongong and Fairy Meadow, Port Kembla and Unanderra, Dapto and Albion Park Rail, Shellharbour, Kiama and Helensburgh. The methods and standards we apply are national, so businesses elsewhere in New South Wales can instruct us as well. Where the assets call for it we inspect on site, such as a fabrication shop in Unanderra or a cafe on Crown Street; for most professional and service firms the records and a video call are enough.
Usually three to five years of financial statements and tax returns, current management accounts, the constitution or shareholders agreement, leases and key contracts, plus whatever the purpose adds, such as the SMSF trust deed or the pleadings in a dispute. After the scoping call you receive an information request tailored to your engagement. Certified reports are delivered from seven business days, counted from the day the last document arrives.
Our reports are prepared under APES 225 Valuation Services and, for litigation, to the expert evidence requirements of the Federal Court of Australia and of the New South Wales courts, including the Expert Witness Code of Conduct in the court rules. Each report states the purpose, the standard of value, the methods, the sources and the reasoning, so a reviewer can follow every step. Whether to accept a report is always the reader's decision, but this is the form the ATO, banks and courts expect, and the certified valuer who signs it explains and defends it.
Indicative valuations start from A$799 and are intended for internal decision-making, so they suit an owner who wants a well-reasoned range before committing to anything. Summary and Detailed reports are certified and are quoted after a free consultation, because the fee depends on the purpose, the number of entities, the state of the records and whether the opinion must withstand review by a court, the ATO or another expert. The fee is confirmed in the engagement letter before work starts, and every report is delivered from seven business days after we receive the information.
